It's that time of the month again where we need to get ready for paying our web hosting company. Pathetic really how - in spite of the thousands of readers that visit this site every day - we struggle each month to raise even the funds needed for our dedicated server hosting package, leave alone hiring editorial staff to free up time for research and writing. So if you haven't already done so recently, go to the donations form underneath the red stop sign now and chip in with whatever you can spare: $5, $20, $50, $100 or more. Sri Lankan maid case 'fabricated'

A Saudi official says the account of a Sri Lankan maid who said her Saudi employers forced 24 nails and needles into her body is “fabricated.”

L. G. Ariyawathi's allegations were baseless and amounted to blackmail, said Saad al-Badah, the head of a Saudi government department responsible for foreign workers.

'US gunman shot dead, hostages safe'

A gunman who had taken a number of people hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarters outside Washington is shot and the three hostages are safe, police says.

Montgomery County Police chief, J. Thomas Manger, said the gunman, James Lee, 43, has been taken into custody. It's not clear what his condition is. The hostages were safe and out of the building, CBS New, reported.

Six killed in Slovakia shooting

Six people have been killed and at least 14 others wounded after an unidentified gunman opened fire in the suburbs of Bratislava in Slovakia.

The bloody incident occurred Monday morning on the streets of Devinska Nova Ves, on the outskirts of the Slovak capital, TASR, the Slovak News Agency reported.

Arizona gunman kills 5, commits suicide

A man suspected of fatally shooting five people in the US state of Arizona has been found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police have identified the suspect as 26-year-old Brian Diez.

Nails removed from maid's body

A Sri Lankan housemaid whose employers in Saudi Arabia allegedly hammered nails and needles into her body has most of the nails surgically removed.

In March 2010, the 49-year-old L.T. Ariyawathi travelled to Saudi Arabia where her Saudi employers allegedly inflicted body harm as a punishment for her complaining about the workload.

Girl-band star escapes jail over HIV infection

A German pop singer who confessed to knowingly exposing two men to the risk of HIV after finding out she had the virus herself was convicted by a court on Thursday of grievous bodily harm.

Nadja Benaissa, 28, from German girl-band No Angels was given a two-year suspended sentence. She could have faced up to 10 years in jail. Prosecutors had sought a lenient sentence because Benaissa had confessed and expressed remorse.

NY taxi driver stabbed for being Muslim

A New York taxi driver has been stabbed by his passenger for being Muslim, amid controversial debate over plans to build an Islamic center near the site of the former World Trade Center.

The Muslim cab driver was brutally stabbed by the assailant after responding to his question, "Are you Muslim?"

A drunken passenger of a taxi in New York City has been arrested for assaulting the driver after finding out he is Muslim, police say.

Michael Enright, who slashed Ahmed Sharif with a folding knife, was detained by police on Tuesday night on charges including attempted murder as a hate crime.

Philippine police have shot dead a sacked police captain who killed eight Hong Kong tourists he held hostage on a bus in Manila, the capital.

Police stormed the vehicle after negotiations with Rolando Mendoza broke down late on Monday night, ending an 11-hour standoff.

Turkish cops to patrol German streets battling ethnic crime?

Turkish police may soon be patrolling Germany's streets. The aim is to get a grip on crime amongst the country's largest ethnic minority. Turkish immigrants are often seen as having failed to integrate into German society, and high unemployment is leading to serious problems. But critics of the new policing plan say it's just another example of discrimination.
