We are running out of cash

Dear Reader,

It's that time of the month again where we need to get ready for paying our web hosting company. Pathetic really how - in spite of the thousands of readers that visit this site every day - we struggle each month to raise even the funds needed for our dedicated server hosting package, leave alone hiring editorial staff to free up time for research and writing. So if you haven't already done so recently, go to the donations form underneath the red stop sign now and chip in with whatever you can spare: $5, $20, $50, $100 or more. Or better even, use the same form to set up a subscription. Something like $50 per year, $20 per quarter or $8 per month would be great.

In the congressional debates on the 1924 Immigration Act, Rep. William N. Vaile of Colorado, one of the most prominent immigration restrictionists, had this to say:

Let me emphasize here that the restrictionists of Congress do not claim that the “Nordic” race, or even the Anglo-Saxon race, is the best race in the world. Let us concede, in all fairness that the Czech is a more sturdy laborer … that the Jew is the best businessman in the world, and that the Italian has … a spiritual exaltation and an artistic creative sense which the Nordic rarely attains. Nordics need not be vain about their own qualifications. It well behooves them to be humble.

The debate over immigration policy has already taken a hard right turn in Australia after boatloads of Sri Lankan Tamils washed up on its shores. Canada - where nearly 500 Tamils came ashore last week - appears set to follow, with 63 per cent of Canadians saying the leaky boat should never have been given safe harbour.

The charge against these recent arrivals is being led by Stephen Harper, Canada's prime minister, with the rest of the country more than happy to toe the piper's line.

Hours after a federal judge blocked the most controversial parts of Arizona's hard-line immigration law on July 28, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham had an idea. That evening, Graham, a South Carolina Republican, announced that he was thinking of introducing a bill to change the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to the children of immigrants born in the United States.

Arizona’s highly popular S.B. 1070 law, which makes being an illegal alien in Arizona a state crime, has been partially stopped by a federal injunction. But the overall law took effect July 29 in a state whose residents have been killed, vandalized and otherwise adversely affected by what really is an invasion. According to S.B. 1070’s author, state Sen. Russell Pearce, 50 percent of all illegal aliens entering the U.S. cross into Arizona. “Enough is enough,” he has often said.

Arizona isn't the only place where politicians with harsh approaches to immigration issues seem to find fans. Witness the June national elections in the Netherlands, where Geert Wilders, a politician who has compared the Quran to Mein Kampf and called for a tax on Muslim headscarves, made an impressive showing. It's still possible he might end up exerting significant influence in the next Dutch coalition government.
