Berlusconi lashes out at opposition

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi has taken a swipe at the country's opposition for preventing his People of Freedom party (PDL) from regional elections.

The Italian prime minister, who is also enmeshed with bribery charges, accused the members of the center-left opposition party of barring his party's candidates from registering in Rome electoral offices, calling for a pro-government demonstration on March 21 in Rome.

Russia denounces US missile system in Europe again

Moscow has once again hit out at Washington's plans for stationing a missile system in Eastern Europe.

Russia cannot allow US plans to deploy elements of its missile system in Europe to threaten the effectiveness of its nuclear deterrent, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.

Road Block: Cops use passers by in human shield

EP endorses Gaza war crime report

The European Parliament backs the findings of a UN investigation that highlights Israel's war crimes in Gaza during the December 2008-January 2009 incursion into the costal region.

On Wednesday, European Parliament passed a resolution calling on the European Union to "demand the implementation of the Goldstone report's recommendations."

UK asylum system shamed after triple suicide

The identities of three asylum seekers, who died after they jumped from a high-rise block of flats in Glasgow, have still not been disclosed by the Scottish police. The bodies of the victims - thought to be from either Russia or Kosovo - were found at the bottom of a 31-storey high-rise on Sunday. Mottaki: Italy arrest of Iranians politically-motivated

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has strongly condemned a move by the Italian judiciary to detain two Iranian nationals.

"Italy's latest movement to detain the two Iranians, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) journalist is immature and politically-motivated," Mottaki told reporters at Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport after his return from Afghanistan on Wednesday evening.

Jewish lobby blocks EU support for UN Gaza report

Pressure from European Jewish lobbyists has forced the members of the European Parliament to change their plan to pass a resolution demanding implementation of the Goldstone report on Gaza war.

The decision to backtrack on the agreement regarding the wording of a draft was taken on Tuesday after the president of the European Jewish Congress, Moshe Kantor, warned that implementing it would gravely damage EU-Israel relations, Ha'aretz reported.

UK police details 2009 detention of Pakistani citizens

British intelligence says the five Pakistani men linked to a terror plot in Britain had been arrested days before they could carry out the strike.

A British intelligence officer told an immigration panel on Tuesday that the group had been planning to stage a terror attack in April last year, but its members were seized in raids in northwest England.

Iran urges Germany to end support for terrorists

The German Ambassador to Tehran has been summoned by an Iranian parliamentary committee over Berlin's decision to release the leader of a Kurdish terrorist group 'Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK).

"As a country which has broad relations with Iran, Tehran expects Germany to end its support for the PJAK terrorist group," Mehr News Agency quoted the Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi as saying.

Swedish newspaper reprints sacrilegious cartoon

A Swedish newspaper has republished a sacrilegious cartoon of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by a Swedish caricaturist.

The Dagens Nyheter newspaper said it was publishing the cartoon in a sign of solidarity with the sacrilegious caricaturist Lars Vilks.
