Bus crash kills 6 people in Arizona

At least six people have been killed and fifteen others seriously injured as a bus operating illegally from Mexico and traveling through Texas and Arizona to Los Angeles slammed into the back of a pickup truck and rolled over at an interstate south of Phoenix.

The bus involved in Friday's accident began its trip near Durango in central Mexico. The vehicle entered the United States at El Paso, Texas, and was traveling westbound on Interstate 10, south of Phoenix, when it rear-ended a pickup at 5:30 a.m. local time (1230 GMT)

US airports expand full-body scanning

US airport officials have showed off new X-ray scanning machines that could go through passengers' clothes and show hidden objects.

The new scanners will be the first of 150 that the federal government intends to deploy in airports across the United States in the next few months.

Passenger ship rescued from Baltic Sea ice

A passenger ship with around 1,000 people aboard has been freed from the heavy pack of ice in the Baltic Sea after getting stuck for hours.

The ship has reportedly returned safely to the Swedish capital of Stockholm early Friday after Ice breakers helped its release, The Associated Press quoted officials as saying.

Hundreds of passengers have been stuck in ice on board two ships ferrying them in the Baltic Sea between Stockholm and the Aland Islands, located between Sweden and Finland.

Swedish maritime authorities say the vessels are not likely to be freed for some time.

US investigates child air traffic controller

US authorities are investigating why a young child directed air traffic at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The child, whose age is not yet known, was apparently directing pilots under an adult's supervision, authorities said on Wednesday adding that the child's voice could be heard through transmissions broadcast by local media.

Giant waves kill two on cruise ship

Two people have been killed and seven others injured after a giant wave hit a cruise ship carrying nearly 2000 passengers in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Malta-registered ship, the Louis Majesty, was on a 12-day cruise, heading to Genoa seaport in northern Italy when it ran into rough seas off the Spanish coast.

Giant waves kill cruise passengers

A series of huge waves have crashed into a Greek-Cypriot cruise ship at a French Mediterranean port, killing two people and injuring six others, officials have said.

The Greek coastguard said the wave smashed glass windshields when it struck the Louise Majesty near the port of Marseilles on Wednesday.

NASA: Chile quake shortened length of days

NASA scientists say that last week's 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile has shortened the length of the day by shifting the earth's axis.

NASA scientist Richard Gross says the quake has shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds.
